An Exceptional Singer
The Advent of Kora with Maanam at the Polish Song Festival at Opole 1980 is considered a symbolic beginning of the great boom that we have experienced during this decade. This short performance, broadcast by the regime's television on the whole of Poland, blew all the stars of the previous era – from Rodowicz to Krawczyk – in five minutes. The bark, briefly cut, making cat movements, with a wild glow in the eyes, singing aggressively in the voice of "Divine Buenos", revealed to everyone that new times are coming. This performance was almost perfect during the August strikes, which brought people who lived in the Vistula a century and a half of sudden freedom.
A Permanent Hangover
The Maanamu songs perfectly embody the spirit of this unbridled freedom. This is especially noticeable on Maanam's first 1981 album, where the hippie dream mixes with punk vibrations. Because, on the one hand, there is a psychedelic "Run with me" and a sensual "Celestial Body Frenzy", and on the other – an aggressive "Breath Breath" and a "desire to breathe". money "schizophrenic. The bark is found in both these aesthetic equally suggestively, which, in retrospect, can be considered a phenomenon on a global scale. The same applies to the texts – because there is both a typical Krakow poeticity and the "black" realism spied on in the Crisis or the Tilt of the time. No wonder almost every song on this album has become a hit with us.
When Martial Law was brutally repressed by the first wave of Polish punk, Maanam created his best albums – "O!" And "Nocny patrol". Marek Jackowski was not then registered in Krakow, so he lived in … the hotel Cracovia. Kora was in turn with her sons in their shared apartment in ul. Casimir the Great. The recordings took place in the winter of 1982 at the Stu Theater. The singer returned home late at night with a special pass, thanks to which from time to time … zomowcy patrols nearby …
"O!" Is our best and worst album. It was the only, unique – it was happening in such a paranoid atmosphere that no other could be created like that, because we would kill each other. An atmosphere of martial law, our shuddering, alcoholism and the breakup of the family have contributed to this. Everyone, except me and the performer, was intoxicated. We recorded on a permanent hangover. If one of the group members was so drunk that he could not record, we gave him a little time to become aware. "
In fact, the echoes of martial law are not heard before the" Night Patrol. "First in the illustrative song" Polish Streets "and in the songs" Kreon "," Zdrada "and "Nocna patrol", which everyone then correctly perceived as metaphorical stories about what happened on December 13 on the Vistula. "Although the militia never entered my home, December 13 at the Grand Hotel Sopot, several horsemen of the apocalypse entered my room last night. And many of my friends were dragged out of their homes, moved to places of internment. "
The more problems with the bark was three songs, although the parade of extraordinarily tall elephants had a clearly psychedelic text, the censors interpreted it as an allusion to the aggression. USSR on Afghanistan "Anton" never sounded on the radio, because it appeared when the Pope's assassination was carried out, in which participated a conspirator Bulgarian of such a name. "Breath of a rat" did not like because of the title. this strange – censorship had to be shocked when, after the texts of Osiecka or Młynarski, she read something like that entryczny
The time of repression served Polish rock music. When Maanam returned to the stage in a free country, he was a completely different band. kitsch songs about love, lack of energy, sentimental crowds. Only "Special Characters" s & # It turned out to be a return to form. Unfortunately – too late.
Men of his life
Bark has always loved men with passion. Marek Jackowski was also like that. A great guitarist, expert in literature, rock genius. They met at Piwnica pod Baranami in Krakow. A beautiful girl with dark hair was sitting on one of the speakers. She immediately caught his attention. He came, spoke and stayed together. In life and on stage. Their marriage lasted from 1971 to 1984. This was not an idyllic relationship. Two years after their marriage, their son Matthew was born, and five years later was born Szymon, the result of Kora's relationship with journalist Kamil Sipowicz
"Our marriage lasted thirteen years and I realized more and more that I did not want not play the role of the woman.I could not live with a man who thought that "as a woman" I could not do this and that, and as a single man, I could do it, that we be Together or not, after a divorce, for a while, we tried to live with Marek in a free relationship, but it did not work. There were too many conflicts between us to make this attempt successful. "[19659016] After the divorce, Kora had a difficult time in her life. Alone, surrounded by greedy managers and drunken musicians, she must raise two sons. She was in a tragic psychological state, she was really interested only in the care of the children. Jackowski was on the brink of life and death, sinking into the abyss of alcoholism. In the end, the singer left her eldest son in Krakow, and with the youngest she moved to Warsaw to live with her father.
She met Kamil Sipowicz much earlier. She was 23 years old and was 21 years old. It was decided by chance. She moved with Marek to the same building where he lived with his mother. They began to get closer – and word by word, gesture to gesture, they fell in love with each other. Because Kamil still had her head in the clouds at the time, Kora decided that she should recognize the fruit of their relationship as a Jackowski child. And they parted for many years, even though their paths intersected from time to time. They did not meet until the second half of the 1980s. And then Sipowicz was a completely different man: mature, reasonable, caring. He took care of Kora and his children, then took charge of Maanam's interests. They settled together only after the death of his mother, who did not accept this relationship. They stayed together for many years, creating an inseparable pair.
There are many indications that Kamil has a huge impact on Kora. He was a child of a hippie counterculture. A supporter of drugs, a fierce enemy of the family and the Church, a fascination of Eastern philosophies, an extreme individualist, rejecting the traditional morality of the Decalogue. No wonder Kora quickly picked up on these points of view. Probably because they were and his loved ones – because of their own past in the hippie movement. Sometimes, however, it went too far – especially when both of them began to support former post-communists, or when they supported their support for the Palikot Movement. Sometimes there were grotesque situations, such as when the police took a package of marijuana, that the recipient was supposed to be … Kory's dog. The singer then used her relations in the world of politics to close the case, putting herself above the law. Thus, she discredited her past achievements, compromising herself more as a human than as an artist. But who of us does not make mistakes in life?
Still alone
Many explains the childhood of Kora. So everyone knew her under her real name – Olga. He remembers his father reluctantly. He wrote of him that he was a handsome and rich boy, favored by women who did not get used to living in tandem. Perhaps he explains by the traumatic experiences of the occupation? As commander of the pre-war police, he was arrested and deported by the Soviets, and his wife died in exile. He was married a second time, but he was unable to keep his family. The burden of his maintenance fell on his mother. When she became ill with tuberculosis, five children were sent to orphanages.
Olga went to Jordanow, where the center was run by the Sisters & Gifts. She remembers the five years that she spent there as a nightmare – she later said with disgust that the nuns were mentally and physically abusing her and other children. When she was a teenager, she wanted to take revenge for the Presents, but she dropped, considering that they behaved thus, because "they had to be horribly unhappy and this misfortune had invaded the children." One of them probably tried to contact her later – but Kora did not want this meeting. When my father died, the girl returned to Krakow from the orphanage. The mother, however, did not survive long. The brothers, in turn, fell into alcoholism and slowly turned their lives into a nightmare.
"If anyone asks me today, if I would like to have another year, I never speak in my life! The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of my youth, it's loneliness.I was alone.I seemed like I was a black, creating the world itself. Our childhood is an orphanage, a hospital, a dormitory, an aunt's home or an escape from home "
No wonder a lonely and desperate teenager was looking for a foster family. She found her among the hippies of Krakow. Fate wanted the center of this movement to be in Krakow. The girl quickly impregnated herself with a transplanted counterculture from America: she scoured the Planty, sat down on the market square, scoured Poland for "gold." ", Took amphetamine, smoked hashish and felt the powder Tri. Then she also knew her first love. One of them was "Pies", the current politician of the Polish right, with whom she had a turbulent affair. Then she remembered those moments as the greatest period of her youth. He was also mythified by Sipowicz in his famous book on hippie communists. Whoever observed this movement from the side, remembers well that it was not as colorful on the Vistula as it might seem after injecting the "compote" – the Polish hippies were gray, dirty and stoned .
In the first phase of the movement However, many important artists. Kantor, Bereś, Dymny, Niemczyński, Marek, then Piwnica pod Baranami. Being under their influence, Kora began to reach for Witkacy, Gombrowicz, Schulz, Camus, Sartre, and read a lot of poetry. This has developed a vivid imagination of his waking children reading in the Jardanowie. It is no wonder that she herself took the pen herself.
"I've been in a supernatural position all the time. We were able to stay out of the house for a week, we stopped listening to music, looked at pictures and wrote. We opened a long door. (…) I felt lost and I knew I had to take control of my life. "
The suicide attempt ended with a break with the drug.Hippie times, however, left an indelible mark on Kory's psyche.Although she then put on a suit punk, she became a hippie for the rest of her life.Of course, Maanam's successes made her able to live at a high level, suspending the counter-cultural ideas of the past, but she was constantly concentrated on herself, her inner, her own emotions and experiences. Not necessarily. While she did not want to talk about it loudly, it was said unofficially that she was suffering from it. a deep depression for years, then bravely fought cancer, even though it was certainly not easy, like all human beings, she had good and bad times in her life. remember that the good.
