The EgyptAir crash in 2016 was probably caused by a fire on board, French investigators said Friday, casting doubt on Egypt 's findings, including traces of explosives.

The BEA said in a press release that "the most likely assumption is that a fire broke out in the cockpit while the aircraft was flying at its cruising altitude and that the fire spread quickly resulting in a loss of control of the aircraft. "

They added that the cockpit voice recorder revealed that the crew had mentioned the existence of a fire on board and that the aircraft system was detecting the smoke in the toilet and avionics bay – the part of the plane.

Sixty-six passengers and crew members died when the Egyptair flight from Paris to Cairo crashed in the southeastern Mediterranean on May 19, 2016. They included 40 Egyptians, 15 French and one British .

Egyptian investigators announced in December 2016 that they had found explosive traces on human remains. The investigation was then transferred to the country's judicial authorities who told the BEA that the crash was the result of a "malicious act" but had not yet produced a final report.

The BEA requested that this report be published in order to "present its differences of opinion".
