Fewer births, more deaths. The end of the effect 500+?

After the joy of last year associated with a higher birth rate than before, there was a state of sobering. The latest data from the Central Statistical Office for the first half of this year show that 194,000 were born during this period. children. For comparison, at the same time last year, it was 200,000, or 6,000 more.

– These data show that the so-called 500+ effect has passed very quickly – said in an interview with "Rzeczpospolita" prof. Piotr Szukalski, a demographer from the University of Lodz. – But I expected this support for families to work longer – he adds.

According to him, the results of this year show that the introduction of an educational advantage has only influenced the birth decision of a child. – But the money itself can not lead to an increase in fertility, since the decline in the number of children since the 1980s must have its consequences. In a word – the mothers are not born, there will be no children – Szukalski shows up.

This is not the end of bad news. From January to June, 4.2 thousand died. more than in the first half of last year. – It's very disturbing. Last year was a record in terms of the number of deaths, so everyone was expecting a significant improvement – says prof. Szukalski

The expert can not explain the greater mortality of Poles. – It is possible that the weather factor worked, although this year the winter was rather mild. I fear, however, that the growing number of deaths may be due to difficulties in accessing a specialist, he says.

The decline in the birth rate and the increase in deaths have reduced the population in the first half of this year. 21,000

Family Policy

The increase in family financial support is one of the methods of increasing fertility in Poland, proposed by the PiS government. The 500+ opponents from the beginning of this program emphasized that for children to be born, young parents must be helped to reconcile their family and professional obligations.

In the meantime, more than 1,500 municipalities do not offer any institutional form of child care. life. Only 16.6% use nurseries. children in Poland

– It's starting to change. As of 2015, the number of child care spaces has increased by 59,000. – Minister of Family and Labor Elżbieta Rafalska told the conference on day care

This was made possible through actions bidirectional. First of all, there is an increase of 450 million PLN in the Maluch + program for the creation of new places. Second, a change in the rules to help create daycares and clubs

On Wednesday, the Family and Work Department launched an interactive nursery map, where you can find a place near your place of residence. In this way, we want to encourage families not to migrate – says Rafalska. – Because only the presence of young people in the country gives a chance to a greater number of children.

Pension for Mothers

The last idea to encourage the birth of children is the introduction of the so-called. maternal retirement. This is an advantage for women who have raised at least four children and who have not worked professionally. According to the head of the Department of Family and Labor, the bill will be made public soon.

– We have a project ready. The final work is still in progress. It will be subject to interdepartmental consultation, first with internal consultations – it announced.

According to government estimates, this benefit will cost PLN 915 million a year.
