Fewer pit stops in Formula 1 Pirelli leaves no doubt

F1 drivers spent two days testing Pirelli tires for the 2019 season, and fans did not receive good information. Next year, the number of races could increase, which will allow you to drive on a single pit stop.

Tire management is one of the elements of the Formula 1 strategy. Drivers have tires with a harder and softer mix. These give teams and drivers a chance to take risks. You can get better times, but this is associated with the need to speed up pit stops.

In the 2019 season, however, such situations may resemble medicine. Pirelli predicts that new tires will allow pilots to use more of a stop during the race.

– We have already seen this year that drivers have often decided to make a single stop. We turned to softer blends and the teams then began to manage the wear and tear of the tires in the race – explained Mario Isola, head of motor sport at Pirelli.

Italy is of the opinion that fans should accept the fact that during the race, pilots only appear once with their mechanics. – Is it good that we continue this approach? The choice is simple Or we accept that everyone uses a single pit stop, or that we make harder tires, and that drivers can push and exceed the limit. If you ask me a sentence, it is better to go to a pit stop, while offering another option to drivers, said Isola.

Director Pirelli believes that experts also overestimate the role of pit stops in the current F1. – It is better to give the drivers more consistent tires, which they trust and can fight on the track. It's better than easily worn tires and all the cutting attempts win in this way. The pit stop is an element of the race. However, it seems to me that all fans prefer overtaking to take place on the runway and not on the service avenue, Italy said.

Isola also points out that not only do tires affect the quality of F1 racing. For example, it indicates the aerodynamic changes introduced for the 2019 season. All in order to facilitate overtaking. – A new aerodynamic package will appear. We do not know what difference it will make. If you ask people for groups, some say that there will be no change. Others say that many things will change. The fuel limit has also been increased, so teams can also prove themselves here. If the car can burn more, the driver will also be able to drive longer. We have to look at F1 as a whole – explained the Pirelli employee.
