Williams driver in the first leg of Saturday's qualifying on the Silverstone track, they fell off the track. The team confirmed that the reason was the aerodynamic reaction of the car to the deactivation of the DRS, which prevented the competitors from keeping the machine on the track.
Grove engineers concluded that the rear wing recently put in place had influenced this. Thus, it was decided before the race to replace it with old ones and to remove some of the new parts. By changing the specifications with the rules of the parc fermé, the Williams pilots were forced to take off from the service avenue
In the case of Siergiej Sirotkin and Lance Strolla, this is not a loss because the Russian and Canadian Brendon Hartley of Toro Rosso, who did not take part in the time trial. The downhill was the only driver not to have the fastest time and to take the 19th place, and Sirotkin (18th) had the worst result of the bid
– We brought new items to Silverstone but we still have to work on it – announced Williams' chief of engineering, Paddy Lowe. – We have a problem with the aerodynamic load on the ground, related only to the use of DRS. We have to assume that this is related to the amendments we introduced in this Grand Prix, although after the training we had a fairly stable platform.
– We have never seen anything like it that happened to us on Saturday. We installed the old wing, which is very good in this aspect – adds Lowe.
