Black clouds have gathered above Brendon Hartley since the beginning of the year, after the management of Toro Rosso and Red Bull criticized his performance. The New Zealander lost his internal rivalry with Pierre Gasly, but he also had a huge impact on the development of the Honda engine. His work was appreciated even by a Japanese producer.
When it became clear in recent weeks that the 29-year-old would leave F1 after this season, Hartley began to defend himself. He even accused his own team of lying.
– Sunday, I left the track of Yas Marina, head up. I am very proud of my previous career, of the adventure that was F1. I still have the feeling of having an unfinished job with this series of races. For now, my debut has been stopped – announced Hartley.
Hartley has had a similar disappointment in the past. As a teenager, he was promoted to the Red Bull junior program and even had the chance to be a test pilot on the team. Later, however, he was excluded from the Red Bulls' talents and found himself in long distance races.

– I've already hit the group. I believe that such situations make you stronger. I also have great people, friends, family and a woman around me. I would like to thank my coach Richie, Toro Rosso's 500 men, whom I can count on. Engineers, mechanics, marketing specialists, a team responsible for the maintenance of our flights or hotels, factory workers, Honda employees. Everyone deserved their thanks, Hartley said.
For now, Hartley's intentions for the 2019 season are unclear. New Zealanders have been successful in WEC long-distance races, but Porsche pulled out at the end of 2017 following Volkswagen's diesel engine door scandal.
