New outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) occur regularly in Romania, most of them being located on small farms where dozens of pigs are generally held. However, recently, a large outbreak has occurred on a farm owned by Carniprod, a Romanian pork producer with its own hog farms.

The suspicion of illness appeared on June 28 of this year, when 8 pigs were killed. The ASF at the farm was confirmed by laboratory tests, the results of which were presented the next day.

At the beginning of Nicolae Ciuleac's epidemic, the general manager Carniprod spoke for the Romanian magazine Industria Carnii – We expect that the whole farm will be infected with the virus, even though we have no evidence of the virus on other objects. We have always had biosecurity measures, but that does not help if the whole area is infected with the virus.

600 hogs were first diverted to liquidation. If the symptoms of the disease do not appear in the next two weeks, other objects of the owner would be spared. However, on July 3 this year the National Office of Veterinary and Food Safety in Romania (ANSVSA) announced that all animals will have to be killed and eliminated. The fire was located in the southeastern part of Tulce district, east of Romania, near the Ukrainian border.
