Now, NASA has posted spider photos on the red planet. prove that extraterrestrials once lived on the Martian surface.
Despite their colorful name, spiders are actually mounds formed by a natural process.
The images were captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and show an area near the south pole of the dark-wine world.

" Spider-like radiant mounds form when the ice of carbon dioxide beneath the surface warms up and is released.
"This is an active seasonal process that has not been observed on Earth. Like dry ice on Earth, the carbon dioxide ice on Mars is sublimated when it warms (passes from solid to gas) and the gas becomes trapped beneath the surface.
"Over time, the trapped carbon dioxide gas is under pressure and is finally powerful enough to make its way. ice like a jet that makes dust come out.
The gas is released into the atmosphere and darker dust can settle around the vent or be carried by the winds to produce streaks. #
"The loss of sublimed carbon dioxide leaves behind these spider-like features etched into the surface."

NASA published photos of another series of "spiders" just after the death of David Bowie in January 2016.
Astronomers will be thrilled this month as Mars appears more big and clearer than usual. The Red Planet is ready for its closest encounter with Earth since 2003 next month when it reaches "opposition" with the sun.
This amazing celestial wonder also coincides with a lunar eclipse of "Blood Moon". which will be the longest of the 21st century.
