The szopkarstwo of Krakow have been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity! This decision was taken by the members of the UNESCO Committee at the meeting in Mauritius. This is the first Polish inscription on this prestigious list!
UNESCO's list includes about 400 entries concerning cultural phenomena and traditions from around the world. Joining it means great prestige.
Winning this inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List is something unbelievable for us. We write the first tradition of Krakow, strongly inscribed in the landscape of our city and still cultivated – said FMF FM, Krakow's vice president, Andrzej Kulig.
Typing Krakow's charity on the List does not only mean prestige, but also the possibility of raising funds for its development.
At the Thirteenth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, held Monday in Port Louis (Mauritius) and ends Saturday, more than 800 delegates from 125 countries discuss heritage protection intangible cultural heritage. There are also representatives of the Polish Departments of Culture and Foreign Affairs, crib manufacturers from Krakow, as well as the Krakow Historical Museum.
The application for registration of the charitable organization of Krakow on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, presented by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – in consultation with the Historical Museum from the city of Krakow and his children – last spring.
This was the first Polish application regarding inscription on this prestigious list, which is already yoga of India, Cuba rumba, Portuguese fado singing, Chinese calligraphy and Mediterranean diet.
During the current session in Mauritius, the list of UNESCO has already been listed, among other things ssirum – Korean stocks have grown in North Korea and South Korea.
The cradles of Krakow are professionally made by about 40 artists. Each of them has his own technique. 79-year-old Maciej Moszew has been competing in Krakow crèches for 58 years and has won the biggest laurels in 34 years. The Malików family is also famous in Krakow, which has been building beds for four generations.
Bedding is a gigantic job for which passion is necessary – stressed one of the talks with the Polish news agency Maciej Moszew.
It takes about 4,000 hours to build a cradle for a competition.
The tradition of building Christmas cribs, inextricably linked to Krakow, dates back to this 19th century city. The Krakow Crèche is a construction depicting the biblical Christmas scene in an environment that refers to Krakow's most recognizable landmarks. Often, through figurines of the nursery, are presented historical and contemporary social events related to the life of Krakow, as well as events of the country and the world.
Baby crib figures are often set in motion by various mechanisms, the additional effect being illumination.
Every year, the nursery designers meet on the first Thursday of December in the Main Market Square in Krakow to present their works, which are evaluated by experts. The competition takes place cyclically from 1937, with a break for the years of the second world war.
The next competition will take place on December 6th!
The scenes of the Nativity can also be admired during the exhibition presented at the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow.
