Low prices for buying fruit, farmers will not win

Approx. 2 zlotys per kg of raspberries and about 1.5 zlotys / kg of cherries – these are the prices that farmers get for fruits delivered for processing. This year's harvests, though better than last year, will not allow farmers to earn a decent income.

"The situation with soft fruit purchase prices is tragic", the treatment this year pays much less than in the previous "- says PAP Bożena Nosecka from the Agricultural Economics Institute and from the food economy. As the expert said, the purchase of strawberries has already ended, this year, on average, for these fruits for the juice, 2.30 PLN / kg were paid, while last year – PLN 3.75 / kg.Frozen strawberries, which must already be down, were more expensive, on average the farmer got 4.40 PLN / kg (in the EU it was 5.40 PLN / kg)

The gooseberry was very cheap, although its harvest was small (they were at the level of 10,000 tons the year previous) and every year they go down, the price of gooseberry was ridiculously low – 0.60 PLN per kg compared to 2.5 PLN / kg in 2017

Prices of cherries up to the livra ison at the processing plant currently stands between 1.25 and 1.5 PLN / kg and cherries for juice (concentrate) are cheaper – companies pay only about 1.10 PLN / kg for – 2.3 PLN / kg). Nosecka pointed out that there is a significant drop in prices compared to last year, when there was a bad harvest because the cherries were dreaming and there was a shortage merchandise. Then for cherries to freeze, the average farmer could get 5,10 PLN / kg

The expert pointed out that raspberries and currants are inexpensive to purchase. For the treatment of raspberry, it offers 1.75-2.0 PLN / kg (in the EU averages 4.4 PLN / kg).

She noticed that raspberry prices have been falling for four years. The record price was in 2015 – 7.7 PLN / kg. Raspberry production is developing very rapidly, mainly in the Balkan peninsula, but also in Ukraine. Collections in other countries are therefore contests for Polish raspberries.

Black currants, still a year below profitability, with delivery to the factory, their price is in the order of 0.40-0.50 PLN / kg (year last PLN 1,10 / kg).

This year, we could expect a drop in purchase prices, because of the favorable weather, but we did not think it would be so important – Nosecka said. Another problem is the lack of people to work at harvest – she added.

According to the President of the Association of the Polish Fruit Association Mirosław Maliszewski, such low purchase prices for fruit – it's a "disaster". There is no reason to justify such low cherry buying prices, factories do not have stock, this is not understandable. It's probably a "game" of treatment plants – he said.

The Farmers' Cabinet admitted that the Union wanted fruit growers to protest by not harvesting fruit, but – as he said – it was necessary to move away from this idea because some fruit growers explained that it was necessary to pick fruit because they had no other way to win.

The Polish Fruit Growers Association, in connection with the dramatic situation caused by the low price of fruits for processing, asked Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki "for an immediate reaction and a very urgent meeting with the Council of the Union of Polish Fruit Producers ". raspberries through apples, cherries and other soft fruits are incomprehensible and unjustified – it is an unjustified use of processors compared to fruit growers (…) it is a pathological situation that serves to obtain benefits excessively high for fruit businesses ".

Barbara Groele, director of the Polish Union of Juice Producers, representing the processing industry, explained to the PAP that the low prices of fruit purchase resulted from their high production in Poland but also in other European countries. With regard to raspberries, Ukraine has become a serious competitor in moving customers away from Poland. She pointed out that most of the frozen concentrates and products that Poland sells abroad.

She added that the recipients of frozen concentrates and food have already provided, inter alia, to Serbia. You no longer need to hurry up to make offers and expect the lowest prices.

Prices paid for purchases are much lower than wholesale or market prices. On the wholesale market in Bronisze on Friday, cherries cost PLN 4 / kg, raspberries PLN 8 / PLN 10 / kg, strawberries PLN 4/6 and black currants PLN 5/10. (PAP)
