The New Zealand authorities have banned one of the country's largest mobile operators from using Huawei technology. China wanted to participate in the modernization of the network as part of the preparation for the implementation of 5G.
The authorities explain that they made a decision for security reasons. A similar decision in 2018 has already been made by Australia, which blocked Huawei's access to work on modernizing the 5G telecommunications network.
The New Zealand intelligence agency told Spark New Zealand that the use of devices provided by Huawei "would greatly increase the risks to national security if it were installed".
Spark in the ad points out that it is "disappointed" by the decision of the authorities. This means that he can not use Huawei's RAN equipment.
The director general of the New Zealand intelligence agency, Andrew Hampton, confirmed that the services felt that the use of Huawei's solutions presented a risk. He declined further comments.
Huawei in the world
Recently, the United States called on allies to give up the use of Huawei equipment in order to set up a new generation 5G communication infrastructure. According to the US administration, this could pose a threat to cybersecurity at the state level. The government has no evidence in this case.
Huawei is currently the world's second largest smartphone maker after Samsung. It is also a leader in the production of telecommunications equipment, which notably supports cellular networks, the Internet and other communication networks dependent on modern communication technologies.
Huawei is also a partner in the Polish 5G strategy agreement for Poland. Recently, the company has been excluded calls for tenders for the establishment of 5G communications infrastructure in countries such as the United States and Australia. Some policy options in Germany are taking such measures, the UK has also issued warnings regarding the security of Chinese network equipment.
