The concert of the Gregorian choir has been canceled, the Arena room is closed until further notice.

A six-meter metal strip fell from the ceiling of the Arena in Poznan. Gregorian band fans lost their evening concert. And they could lose their lives. The room is closed until further notice.

A fragment of the ceiling was detached Tuesday morning. At that time, preparations for the evening concert of the Gregorian choir were underway in the lobby of the Poznań Arena.

– Around 9:30, a suspended ceiling element fell. For security reasons, the editing work related to the preparation of the concert was interrupted – inform Karolina Nawrot of the operator of the Poznań International Fair, Arena.

The disappointed fans

The first information about the incident only appeared in the afternoon. Then the concert organizer said that "as a result of the event", the concert will take place one hour later and at another location in the Earth Hall of Poznań International Fair. Then it was reported that the event had been canceled.

Gregorian fans are not disappointed. "The information 2 hours before the show is a bad excuse for 4 people crossing half of Poland" – wrote one of them.

"JI come from Great Britain and here the concert is canceled, "wrote another fan.

The choir itself also spoke and announced that she was trying to set a new date for the concert.

"Żyletka" who could have killed

Fans regret having lost their performance. but they can really talk about luck. If the detachment occurred during the show, they could lose their lives.

– A fragment of the suspended ceiling has been torn off. Paweł Łukaszewski, inspector of construction supervision in Poviat in Poznań, said two elements fell, with a total length of 6 meters and 15 centimeters in width with sharp edges.

As he admits, if this metal "razor blade" fell on people, it could lead to a tragedy.

Importantly, this is not a structural element of the room, but an aluminum soffit. The item was removed from use until further notice.

They are waiting for the results of the inspection

– Two inspectors succeeded instead. The Facilities Manager was required to carry out a detailed and complete check of the suspended ceiling. It must be performed by a person with construction qualifications. After having received the technical protocol, we will know if this situation was only in one place or if the ceiling had to be repaired elsewhere, says Łukaszewski.

It is possible that the aluminum panel was mechanically damaged. In the arena, sports events are regularly held in the arena and the ball hits the ceiling several times. This one could have broken the construction of this latte.

MTP hopes that it will be possible to organize the next scheduled events in the Arena. On weekends, there will be sports competitions and, next week, three concerts of Dawid Podsiadły.

– For the moment, no other changes are planned in the program of events – informs Nawrot.

But Łukaszewski reserves: – Only a clear and unambiguous response resulting from the protocol will allow a later use of the object.

Built on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Polish People's Republic

Arena Hall was built on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Polish People's Republic. It was commissioned on June 28, 1974. The construction lasted 23 months. The author of the project was Jerzy Turzeniecki. The building is inspired by Rome's Palazzetto dello Sport.

For years, it has been said that this required a major renovation. A few years ago, construction supervision carried out a general inspection of the structure of the building. – The technical condition of the object is not the best – admits Łukaszewski.

After this control, the former operator – the sports and leisure centers of Poznań – reinforced the supports of the hall.

Since January 2018, the operator of the hall is the Poznań International Fair, which is planning a major renovation for 2020.

It will consume around 45 million zlotys. In addition to the modernization of the hall, it also assumes the construction of a parking lot.
