withWhen asked if it was best to go to the university or start his own business, he had no doubt. – You can still go to university and a business opportunity may not happen again – said Steve Wozniak, one of the three founders of Apple, at the time. a meeting in Warsaw.
The other two are Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne. The third is rarely mentioned, because only two weeks after the creation of the company, she sold 10%. shares for $ 800. Today, that would be about $ 100 billion. It is a lot of money.
Wozniak himself left Apple in 1985 and since then has been a mentor and lecturer, participating in numerous conferences. He is also a shareholder of the company and also receives a salary. It was introduced in Poland by the Polish National Foundation, for a similar amount (according to Rzeczpospolita) of up to PLN 600,000 – the normal rate of Wozniak being about $ 150,000.
What was Wozniak doing in Poland?
About 200 people attended the meeting as part of the "100×100 project". The foundation celebrating the 100th anniversary of Poland's reconquest of independence invites 100 world-renowned personalities to promote Poland abroad. The series of meetings was inaugurated in Warsaw by Mika Hakkinen, Master World Formula 1.
Wozniak had an hour to answer a few questions. One of them concerned, of course, his Polish roots. Woz – because that's what he's calling in Silicon Valley – admitted that he was proud of them. They are not particularly strong, because Steve's great-grandfather was born in the nineteenth century in Poland, then the family emigrated to the United States. Wozniak is the next generation raised in the United States. He admitted however that at school, at the age of 13, he had kissed his Polish friend.
Under the impulse of an organized conference attended by representatives of NFPs, journalists, students and academics from several universities, Wozniak mainly spoke about his youth. He recalled that his first employer, Hewlett Packard, had rejected his idea five times of taking care of the production of personal computers.
Woz is – as he points out – an engineer and a builder.
– I've built my first computer alone. He was ugly and no one else knew how to do it, he recalls. At HP, he's busy designing scientific calculators, but he left when, with his partners, he decided that it was time to start his own business.
Hard or software?
Today, he thinks software is bigger and more durable than hardware.
– At the beginning, we won money with the equipment. It must be remembered that the whole of Silicon Valley has evolved over the course of its construction and design. But for some time, this software is at the top, although robotics is also important. In my opinion, it's the future – so if a student asks me how to have a good, reliable job, I'll tell him to take care of the robots – says Wozniak.
He also explained how it happened that he abandoned Facebook.
– I had 5,000 friends that I did not know. At first, Facebook was a good idea, but for many people, it turned into addiction, which prevents them from choosing. He did nothing to make people have a better life, he explained.
Leaders questioned Wozniak on many issues related to Poland, including the tax breaks for startups, which are praised by the Morawiecki government. According to Woza, incentives to start a business are a good idea, but he also admitted that the less regulation there is for small businesses, the better.
– California saw many years ago that there was a future in startups. She gave them tax breaks and see where she is now. But the state should not regulate their activities, the regulations are useful to large companies – he said in Warsaw.
Something went wrong
By the way, Wozniak criticized the direction taken by technology.
– When I was little, my father only worked in the family. Then it was possible and the money was enough to keep the whole family, the house, the holidays and so on. My father said that if I wanted to deal with technology, maybe I could get people to work 4 days a week instead of 5 days. the front, but today in the family must work two people and the money is often missing – he said.
It is not known how long Wozniak will entertain in Poland and he will attend some meetings.
