The project prepared by the studio A-A Collective won the competition concept of a fragment of Plac Defilad, located between the main entrance of the Palace of Culture and Marszałkowska. "The project reconciles different interests and functionalities", stress the managers.
During the press conference of Tuesday, the city council presented the winning concept of the development of the place, working in a central way. Its authors are: Zygmunt Borawski, Srdjana Zlokapa and Martin Marker Larsen from A-A Collective Studio. Their project stands out in the context of large green areas of competition (although it is far from the proposal presented by Wygra Warszawa by Jan Śpiewak).
Pre-war focus
– The work has drawn attention to the diversity of types of greenery and their distribution according to the seasons. The attention is also drawn to the multifunctionality of space while maintaining a large amount of greenery and water, as far as the underground infrastructure allows, said Michał Olszewski, Vice President of Warsaw. Remember: besides the infrastructure of the Palace of Culture and Science and the first line under the square, underground parking must be built.
What did the jury appreciate on the other? – We pointed out that she had discovered the old layer of Warsaw among her works. It is an element of nostalgia, which aspires to Warsaw before the war. The surface system recreates the buildings of the prewar period. This is one of the unique things he took for the heart – justify the election of Vice President Olszewski.
– The project proposed by this group of architects seems to be a very clear idea referring to the past. He uses a sketch that we have kept in our mental memory, but which can be filled differently each time. This project allows different areas in different ways to meet the different needs of the Varsovians. It could be, for example, a very green square, very watery or for mass events – said Marlena Happach, architect of the city, director of the Office of Architecture and Regional Planning.
An innovative formula
The work was selected on an unusual competition course. In the first step, five best works have been selected. Then they were subjected to social consultations, and finally – with their consideration – the winner was appointed. There was no delay. We met the last five a year ago and the winner was to be known in the first quarter of this year.
– For the first time, we applied an innovative formula combining competition, social consultations and negotiations – emphasized Michał Olszewski. – This process has been an exercise for us, as we are able to develop solutions for an urban space in the dialogue process in order to reconcile various interests and functionalities – he concluded.
