Hundreds of dead birds

– The waters of the lagoon belong to the Baltic Sea and, in accordance with Article 53 of the Hunting Act, 5 kilometers from the coast, you can not hunt for birds. It is their place of rest and prey during very long journeys. The hunters treated them as a real shooting stand. This hunt was illegal – Cenian is angry.

Perhaps, according to ornithologists, up to a thousand birds could die: greylag goose, black-footed geese and cereal geese. The failure of ornithologists enumerates more: there was no dog that would pick up dead birds, there was no Polish guide, the birds were attracted by imitating their sounds. Residents were also expected to find dead birds and bird carcasses in the area – the hunters did not even intend to take them. Ornithologists warned the police.

The hunt was organized by the local hunting club "Mewa". This so-called "currency hunt" – this name was kept after communist times, when hunts for Western hunters were organized in order to obtain valuable foreign currencies.

The lagoon is also the sea

The hunters claim that no one has broken the law and that all legal requirements have been preserved. – You can not identify the waters of the lagoon with the sea. The hunters had all the consents for shooting birds – says Paulina Marzęcka, spokeswoman for the Polish Hunting Association. The representatives of the hunting club "Mewa" do not want to comment on this.

The Gdynia Maritime Office dispels doubts. – The Vistula lagoon is part of the marine areas and the coast of the Vistula lagoon is a seacoast – explains Magdalena Kierzkowska, spokeswoman of the Office. The legal basis for this interpretation is the Law on Marine Areas of the Republic of Poland and the Maritime Administration.
