Tomasz Hajto: Give Brzęczek time!

A column of Tomasz Hajto

I will not hide – I was surprised by the choice of Jerzy Brzęczka as coach of the Polish national team. Jurek is my very good friend. I played with him in the frame, in the clusters of Gornik Zabrze, we lived in a room. We know that I cross my fingers for him!

However, it's hard for me to say how good he will be in the role of a coach. His coaching career has followed different paths. An unsuccessful stay in Gdansk, an unsuccessful stay in Katowice and a great job with Wisla Płock, with whom he fought for the match in European competitions until the end. Of course, working as a coach in a club is completely different from the one with the performance. Our national team is in the period of reconstruction, of generational change. Some players will have to say "thank you". The only question is whether Jurek will be able to do that.

Many people talk about Kuba Błaszczykowski, who is Brzęczka's nephew. In my opinion, this will not matter. Jurek is a Polish selector. If Kuba plays, it will be necessary for our team. If no, why should he be in the team? Brzęczka must look mainly at the good of the team. Any case does not make sense to me. Jurek is a professional. He can separate commercial matters from family matters.

One thing is certain, you can not immediately criticize Brzęczka. Let us show him. President Zbigniew Boniek did not use it for a reason. The League of Nations will be good for us before the elimination of EURO 2020. Let's give Jurek time. Let him show what he can do. We know that his job is a risk. But the same can be said about signing a contract with a trainer. Nobody gives a guarantee of the result. PZPN can spend up to 5 million euros on the annual salary of the coach, but then what? The fund plays a secondary role. Hard work counts. And who loves someone, but Jurek knows it. He is a man immensely involved in what he does. He is a professional in every way. And I think that will show it. Let's just give him some time. I wish him all the best.
