Adrian Pudło: Do you remember your first contact with the rocket?
Iga Świątek: – It was so early that I probably do not remember anymore. My older sister, Agata, was playing tennis, so I took all my love for this sport. And I've always wanted to be better than Elle. I took him rockets, bullets and "trained".

When did you finally defeat him?
– Never, unfortunately. When she was 16, she had to finish her career. I was 13 years old at the time, I could not stand it yet. But I think I'd have a good chance now (laughs).

Health, injuries?
– Yes. The worst thing is that the parents went to see the doctors with her, everyone said something different, no one knew what it was. Dad finally came to the conclusion that it would be safer to say goodbye to tennis and to focus on learning. She finished one of Warsaw's best high schools, now that she is studying, everything has worked very well.

Are not you jealous?
– A little for sure. She was probably the second or third pole in the rankings, but I think she managed to come to terms with all of that. There are many challenges in life before us, we need to focus on that.

Behind you an injury, a long pause … You were not afraid to share your fate?
– Of course, I was scared. There were such thoughts, but – to be honest – we are slightly different people, from the beginning I felt that I would leave it. In addition, in my case, the ankle problems were diagnosed very early, in Agata we did not know until the end what was wrong.

Dad, former sportsman, dreamed that you would be a tennis player?
– We have already tried to swim, but I only remember that they chased me out of my first class.

For what?
– I was afraid of water.

So where does this idea come from?
– Agata did very well, I also wanted to try.

Why did not she become a famous swimmer?
– She still had ear infections and other similar problems. In the end, the parents decided that we had to find something outside for us.

They pushed rockets into your hands
– No, we tried different possibilities. Dad was only interested in us doing individual sport, that was his only condition. Tennis came alone.

Dad is here, daddy over there. He is next to you, he supports you, but this model, with his father close to everything, sometimes – as shown by the example of the Radwański family – works differently. You do not need to "become independent"?
– Every loving parent is a little overprotective and he can certainly disturb the kids, but I always tell him everything straight from the bridge. It depends on him whether he will listen to me or not.

And how will he not hear?
Fortunately, he usually does it (laughs). And if he does not, he has the back of his head that Iga wants this or that. Generally, I care most about being just my dad and not a coach or a counselor, so I hope he'll focus on that role.

Your coaches have said that you have a difficult character and that you are unbearable. Do you give them a lot of trouble?
– First of all, I am very stubborn. I ask them a lot, I call and write often after training, but I think they're used to it a little bit. We are like a family, there are no hours of work, from the eighth to the sixteenth, then the silence. I realize that this can be a nuisance, I try to slow down a bit, but I feel that I really like it in my heart, that we have such contact.

You sit at night, watch the best games, then call them and say: I want to learn this, this and that?
– No, despite appearances, I do not have an obsession for tennis. In fact, to be honest, I liked it, I do not know, some … two years ago?

How are you?
– I went to training, I liked to play, but I did not like it at all, I did not like watching games at home.

And what has changed?
– I felt the atmosphere of the Grand Slam, all serious games, and I discovered a little. But I still do not watch any games on YouTube, tennis, so there are a lot of things in my life.

Do you train more than peers?
– I think even less. There was a period when I focused a little too much on the school. Now, I know that playing is what I want and what I am going to do in life, so we are going to expand the training units a little bit.

In a conversation for Sport.pl, Joanna Sakowicz-Kostecka mentioned that as an eleven-year-old girl, you were not a distinctive player. You were in the lead, but the tournaments for the kids were more focused on the others. What happened where you are where you are, and you can not hear from others?
– It is always difficult to place so much hope in a child. The pressure is great, you can not stand it and, unfortunately, it happens often. I was lucky not to have to do it. Although my parents believed in me, I never heard that "I have to win, I have to defeat everyone because my father wants it". I approached loosely, played with my tennis and that 's probably why I loved him. Other girls may not have such comfort.

Have you heard "science first, then tennis"?
– Yes. In general, I think that if I was a bad student, I would not play tennis.

Have you had any penalties for bad grades? No training, these questions?
– To be honest, I've had some bad reviews in my life. I only had "Pała" once in my life, in mathematics, how much did I talk with my friend. Besides, I knew that the parents were very demanding in this business and tried to please them.

I will not compare you to Agnieszka Radwańska, because you yourself said that you are completely different tennis players. She has succeeded, she is Polish, you – in a sense – you follow her. Have you asked for advice on how to deal with all this confusion, how to enter the big world smoothly? Do you receive messages from her?
– No, we did not come into contact. I guess these big stars are so focused on their own careers that they just do not have the time and opportunity to help the juniors. I receive all the knowledge of the trainer and the coach, I am the path that they have traced for me.

On the occasion of your success, we talk a lot about the difficulties related to the transition to adult tennis. What makes so few players win the junior Grand Slam tournaments?
– At a certain level, practically all players play tennis, they are very well prepared physically, so the factor that decides in favor of one or the other is psychic strength. It is very difficult to bear the pressure, to get used to the idea that they look at you full of stands, people in front of the televisions …

You succeed
– Fortunately, yes, but I still learn.

Is this your greatest tennis asset?
– Yes, I think so. I can develop a psychic advantage over my rivals.

Weaknesses?
– I suffer badly, I take care of it on average. Sometimes, when something hurts, such thoughts appear that maybe I should give up, give a match, scratch? Fortunately, for the last year, especially after the injury, I have learned to fight a little bit. The coach helped me a lot, which made me realize that pain is an inseparable part of the sport. It's better.

When a calf hurts you during the match, do you feel it, you are discouraged, you grimace and you do not want to bounce the ball anymore?
– It's rather that I think about it too much. Instead of focusing on the game, I begin to feel sorry for myself. I have experienced this situation at the Australian Open last year: I was a favorite, but I lost it because I was focusing on my hurt belly, I was suffering … Now it's better, but I still have to learn how to manage.

The experience will help
– Yes, now I know that there is still a lot of suffering on the Grand Slam.
