PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) – The investigators revealed the identity of a man who was killed in North Philadelphia after allegedly stealing a car with three children in the back seat.

At a press conference Friday, homicide captain Jason Smith said they thought at least three men had participated in the death of Eric Hood, aged 54. years.

It all started Thursday night, according to the police, shortly after 9 pm, after a 25-year-old woman let her car run past the New Star Pizza at 28th and Dauphin Streets visits her little one. 25 year old friend inside.

According to Ms. Smith, while she was inside the pizzaria, Eric Hood, 54, got into the car in which three children were inside just before leaving.

However, Hood encountered an obstacle: he found himself stuck in traffic a few blocks away. The woman's boyfriend was able to catch the car and take out the thief.

"There was a first altercation between Mr. Hood and the children's father and it was at that time that he was removed from the vehicle at 29th and York Street." However, I do not want to speculate on whether the father's involvement continues after this moment, "Smith said.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said that Hood then tried to run away and that the boyfriend managed to catch up, but this time to a block away, which caused a fight.

"Then, other men from the neighborhood intervened and started punching and kicking the man who had taken the vehicle," said Samll, "to the point he lost consciousness. "

"The crowd kicked Mr. Hood up until the police arrived," Smith added. "At one point, Mr. Hood became insensitive."

Hood was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a serious head injury. The children – aged 5 years, 1 year and a half and 7 months – were not injured.

The parents have since been questioned by detectives and no charges have been laid, Smith said. Investigators are still waiting for the results of the medical examiner's office as well as the toxicology report.

"After receiving these results, we will talk with the prosecutor's office about a possible charge," Smith added.

Smith also says that they are watching a video taken on the scene to identify all the people involved in this deadly confrontation.
