Maryland State Police said that a soldier had shot and killed a man who stabbed him during a fight on Monday.

The soldier was released from a shock trauma center several hours after the shooting in Westminster, about 58 kilometers northwest of Baltimore, police said. The soldier will be on administrative leave, a standard procedure, while he is recovering from his injury.

Michael J. D'Angelo, the 34-year-old Westminster man suspected of stabbing the soldier, was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The soldier met the suspect at around 8am after responding to two pieces of information about dead car tires. One of the interlocutors said the suspect was armed with a knife, police said. The suspect stabbed the soldier on the side of the body during a fight, before the soldier shot him, police said. A knife was found on the scene, police said.

"The motive for the actions of the suspect remains unknown so far," said the police statement.

Police do not believe that soldiers from the local state police barracks had contact with Angelo before Monday.

State police spokesman Greg Shipley said the suspect was white, as was the wounded soldier.

Police are reviewing videos of nearby buildings, he said. The soldier did not have a camera worn by the body and Shipley said he did not know if the soldier had a dashboard camera.

The soldier is a veteran of the state police for six years.
