According to the authorities, a New Jersey director was stabbed in a school during a rehearsal for the eighth grade graduation.

According to a Rutherford police release, a 14-year-old student walked through the Washington School gymnasium on Friday morning and hit the director of the Union School several times. The student then returned, dropped the knife and put his hands in the air.

The principal was identified as Kurt Schweitzer. He and the student were both treated in a hospital for life-threatening wounds. Rutherford Public School Superintendent Jack Hurley told the Bergen Record that Schweitzer was "a little shaken" but physically fit.

Hurley declined to comment on any disciplinary action against the student, who was charged with aggravated assault and possession of weapons.

Rutherford police will attend Wednesday's graduation ceremony as a precautionary measure.
