Feb. 21 (Reuters) – Actor Jussie Smollett was arrested after being accused of lying to the police. He was allegedly attacked and beaten by two masked men shouting racist and homophobic insults, Chicago police reported on Twitter on Thursday.
Smollett, a 36-year-old black and openly gay actor in the hip-hop drama "Empire," unleashed a storm on social media by informing police on Jan. 29 that two suspected supporters of US President Donald Trump have made the news. had struck, put a noose around his neck, and bleached him.
Smollett is under arrest and detained by detectives, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, told Twitter on Thursday.
The Cook County Attorney's Office has approved criminal proceedings against Smollett for disorderly conduct and filing a false police report, Guglielmi said on Twitter.
