Police on Tuesday chased a black-haired attacker who killed a retired administrator at California State University, Fullerton, in the campus parking lot. A 911 call sent officers to the field on Monday morning where they found Steven Shek Keung Chan in his silver Infiniti.
He was bleeding and had been stabbed several times, the police said. Efforts to help him failed and Hacienda Heights man, 57, died on the scene, police said.
A backpack belonging to the attacker was found under the car. It contained a knife-like weapon, items that could be used for kidnapping and incendiary devices, said Fullerton Police Lieutenant Jon Radus.
"It was basically like a bottle containing a flammable liquid and a potential igniter," but that was not triggered, Radus said.
The 911 caller described the attacker as running away like a man in his twenties, black-haired, wearing black pants and a black shirt, Radus said. Agents using dogs searched for the man but did not find him. The police "will work tirelessly to identify the suspect involved," the department said in a tweet.
The attacker specifically targeted Chan, although investigators are still trying to determine the motive, Radus said. From 2009 to 2017, Chan was the director of budget and finance and university student services for higher education, the university said.
He returned to campus as a special consultant in early 2019 "to provide his wise counsel and wisdom," said university president Fram Virjee in a statement.
Virjee declared that he did not personally know Chan, "but in recent hours, by offering a shoulder on which to support his loved ones, it is clear that he was loved for his commitment and his passion for Cal State Fullerton and our Titan family ".
