Federal authorities have arrested a woman whose former romantic partner says she took a laptop from the office of House of Commons Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the riot on the U.S. Capitol.
Riley June Williams was arrested Monday, according to a Justice Department official. It is not yet known when his initial appearance will take place.
The FBI said in an arrest warrant on Sunday that Williams had not been charged with theft, but only illegally entering the Capitol and disorderly conduct.
FBI officials said a caller claiming to be an ex of Williams said her friends showed her a video of her picking up a laptop or hard drive in Pelosi’s office. The caller claimed that she intended to send the device to a friend in Russia who planned to sell it to the foreign intelligence service there, but that plan failed and she either got the device, or destroyed it. The FBI says the case is still under investigation.
Pelosi Deputy Chief of Staff Drew Hammill confirmed on Jan. 8 that a laptop was taken from a conference room, but said “it was a laptop that was only used for presentations ”.
Williams’ mother, who lives with her in Harrisburg, Pa., Told ITV reporters that her daughter suddenly became interested in President Donald Trump’s politics and “far-right bulletin boards.” His father, who lives in Camp Hill, told local law enforcement that he and his daughter went to Washington on the day of the protest, but did not stay together, later meeting to return to Harrisburg, the FBI said.
Williams’ mother told local law enforcement her daughter packed and left before being arrested, saying she would be gone for a few weeks. She also changed her phone number and deleted a number of social media accounts, the FBI said. Court documents do not mention a lawyer for her.
