North Port Police Public Information Officer Josh Taylor spoke to CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” shortly after police entered the North Port home where Brian Laundrie and his children live. parents, and said investigators “were speaking with the family, currently we are not speaking with Brian.”
A physical search for Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old woman reported missing in Florida, is underway in Wyoming. Her family last heard from her over three weeks ago, after she embarked on a trip across the country with boyfriend Brian Laundrie.
Police described Brian only as a person of interest.
Taylor added that he “didn’t believe” Brian was at home when authorities spoke to his family.
Taylor confirmed that the Laundrie family called the police through their lawyer to come to their home and speak to them.
“It’s obviously important for us to speak with family, but that’s the second half of it,” Taylor said. “I hope they help us get to Gabby, obviously our goal is to get her home.”
Jim Schmidt, Petito’s stepfather, told “The News with Shepard Smith” that it was “really hard to understand” why Brian hadn’t spoken to the authorities.
“It’s incredibly frustrating, incredibly frustrating, and we just want them to speak out and help us, that’s all we’re asking,” Schmidt said in an interview on Friday night. “They are not speaking, so our calls are now public, and that is really all we are waiting for, that eventually those calls are answered and that we get information.”
Schmidt flew to Wyoming to help with the search effort.
The FBI is leading the search and has focused on the area of Grand Teton National Park, where her family said she was last seen. An area of interest also includes Jenny Lake, where a witness said she and her husband saw Petito’s van parked at 5 p.m. on August 25.
Schmidt elaborated on the “complex” research effort in Wyoming.
“It involves multiple jurisdictions, that’s one thing we’ve learned in this area, between the vast area here between local, county, National Park Service, there are a lot of agencies that are all working together with that in cooperation with the FBI, as well as Florida and, at the beginning, the New York agencies as well, ”said Schmidt
