Rapper Nipsey Hussle was under investigation by Los Angeles police at the time of his death, revealed Monday.

The joint investigation, which also includes the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, aimed to determine whether there was gang activity in the Grammy-nominated rapper's strip mall, according to the New York Times. .

The property at the forefront of the investigation is where Hussle, 33, was shot on March 31 in front of his own clothing store.

Eric Holder, 29, suspected of shooting Hussle, was charged with murder and risked jail for life if convicted.

It is unclear what opened the mall investigation, but the investigation is still ongoing, according to the report.

Hussle's partners on the property, which also includes a cell phone shop and a hair salon, are also the focus of the investigation, the report said.

LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein said the department was in contact with Hussle's trading partners at the mall to "solve some of these crime problems," according to the Times.

The ongoing investigation almost led to Hussle's expulsion from the mall before the rapper and a group of partners raised $ 2.5 million to buy the band, the report said.

At a memorial for Hussle at Staples Center in Los Angeles last April, Hussle's brother, Samiel Asghedom, told the crowd how they had avoided the eviction.

"I do not know if anyone knows it, but we received 30 days notice and they kicked us out of all the companies we owned in the lot," Asghedom said.

Instead, the owners told their siblings: "At this point, if you're still interested in buying the land, you know, rather than firing yourself, we're ready to sell it to you."
