RALEIGH, N.C. – Investigators in North Carolina have opened an investigation into the killing of a man by a police officer in the US capital, authorities said Sunday.
Soheil Antonio Mojarrad, 30, was killed during a meeting with an officer on Saturday night at a mall in the east of the city, Raleigh police said.
We do not know what motivated the filming. Officials did not immediately reveal whether Mojarrad was armed with a firearm or other weapon when he was shot.
Police identified the police officer involved in the shootings as W.B. Edwards. Edwards was equipped with a camera to the body at the time of the shooting, but that was not activated, officials said. Raleigh police and agents from the State Investigation Bureau were watching another video related to the incident, the police said.
The authorities stated that the SBI would submit the findings of its criminal investigation directly to the Wake County Prosecutor. Raleigh police will conduct an internal affairs investigation focused on compliance with departmental policy, while local detectives will investigate Mojarrad's actions leading to the shooting.
According to the website of the Municipal Identification Bureau, Mojarrad reportedly carried out a series of arrests in the Raleigh area until 2009 and was arrested in January for a simple assault.
Mojarrad, who was charged in 2017 for assaulting a company or campus police officer and for disorderly conduct, was also arrested several times for drugs, as well as for theft and theft.
Online information also indicates that he was arrested in Flagler County, Florida, in 2009 and charged with stealing and displaying resistance to an agent.
