Police looking for Brian Laundrie have reportedly discovered a recently used campsite in the vast Florida park where the fugitive in the Gabby Petito case told his parents he was going on a hike.
A source close to the 23-year-old’s family told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Wednesday night that authorities said they had “found new evidence of a campsite” in the vast 25,000-acre Carlton Preserve in Sarasota.
News of the discovery came when the family’s lawyer announced that Laundrie’s father, Chris, would join the massive manhunt.
The North Port Police Department categorically denied asking for the father’s help, but lawyer Steven Bertolino insisted “law enforcement” wanted the family’s help and suggested that maybe the FBI made the request.
Authorities declined to comment.
Bertolino told CNN that Chris Laundrie was asked to help North Port cops with their search, but police had to postpone.
“Chris Laundrie has been asked to assist law enforcement in their search for Brian on the reservation today,” Bertolino said in a statement.
“Since the reserve was closed to the public, Chris hasn’t been able to look for Brian in the one place Chris and Roberta think Brian might be,” he told The Post.
“Unfortunately, North Port Police had to postpone Chris’s involvement, but Chris and Roberta are hoping there will be another opportunity to help,” the lawyer added.
When asked on CNN if Laundrie’s parents thought he was on the reservation or in another area, Bertolino replied, “No, they don’t believe he is in another area. They believe he is on the reserve.
Laundrie is said to have hiked the reserve on September 13 and never returned to his parents’ house in nearby North Port.
Laundrie is the only person affected by the disappearance of his 22-year-old girlfriend. He had returned home earlier after the couple traveled across the country on September 1 without Petito.
Wyoming federal authorities issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie on September 23 for allegedly fraudulently using Petito’s debit card.
Petito was reported missing on September 11 and her body was found on September 19 at a remote campsite in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming, with a coroner later declaring her death a homicide.
