One person has died and five others are injured after a shooting in Deep Ellum early Sunday morning, police said.
According to the Dallas Police Department, officers heard gunshots while patrolling the intersection of North Malcolm X Boulevard and Main Street at around 12:42 a.m.
Police said officers saw Lathaniel Pearson, 18, point a gun and ordered him to drop the gun.
Pearson dropped the gun and fled from the officers, but was caught and arrested after a short foot chase, police said.
Police said at the same time several other people were also firing weapons in the area where Pearson was located at the time of the shooting.
One victim, identified as Kenneth Walker, 18, was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
A second victim, aged 19, was taken to a hospital in the region in critical condition.
Police said there were four other gunshot victims, all women between the ages of 15 and 30, who sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
Police say it is not clear whether one of the bullets fired by Pearson was responsible for Walker’s death or injuries to the other victims.
Police said Pearson was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and for evading arrest.
The motive and circumstances surrounding this investigation are still under investigation, police said.
