Police Obtain Warrant Charging MIT Graduate with Murder in Fatal Yale Student Shooting

Connecticut Police have obtained an arrest warrant charging a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate with murder in the fatal shooting of a Yale University student.

The New Haven Police Department announced the charges against Qinxuan Pan in a Facebook post on Saturday. He is still at large, according to the authorities.

Pan, 29, of Malden, Massachusetts, was previously named a “person of interest” in the death of Kevin Jiang. The Yale School of the Environment second-year graduate student was shot and killed in front of his car on February 6.

Police were investigating whether Jiang, 26, was a targeted victim in a road rage incident that may have occurred after a car accident.

At a press conference earlier this month, New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said Pan should be considered “armed and dangerous” and the public should exercise “extreme caution. ” around him.

Police said Pan was seen in a stolen Massachusetts vehicle at the Best Western Hotel in North Haven on the night of the shooting. Authorities previously obtained two arrest warrants against Pan, one for possession of a stolen vehicle in North Haven and the other for stealing a vehicle outside of Massachusetts.

On February 11, he was seen driving with family members in Brookhaven, Ga., According to the US Marshals Service. Agency officials believe he could stay with family or friends in suburban Atlanta.

US Marshals said he was offering a reward of $ 10,000 for information leading to Pan.

An MIT spokesperson previously told NBC News that Pan received undergraduate degrees from the university in computer science and mathematics in June 2014 and was enrolled as a graduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. since September 2014.

Jiang’s fiancee graduated from MIT with a bioengineering degree in 2020. It is not known if she knew Pan.
