INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An Indianapolis police officer and two other people were shot and wounded at an apartment complex northeast of the city Wednesday night.
A man suspected of being the shooter died in Eskenazi hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Police were called on a domestic disturbance call just before 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 7500 block of Bayview Club Drive. It’s in the Bayview Club Apartment Homes just southwest of the I-69 and I-465 interchange.
The police do not know where the call is coming from.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the officer was shot in the leg while checking the perimeter of the apartment. He was stable in a local hospital.
A girl and a woman were also shot dead and in critical condition. The girl was taken to the IU Methodist Health Hospital; the woman was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.
This is the fourth child to be shot dead in Indianapolis in less than two weeks. The other three children at home during the shooting are physically fine, but police say even an injured child is too much.
“We have seen tonight what can happen when people make bad decisions and have no other way to deal with their conflicts than violence. It is unacceptable. We also need to think about it and wrap our arms around the children who have escaped. They are traumatized and will be traumatized for a while and as a community we owe it to them to provide them with whatever we can, to grow up happy and healthy after what they have been through tonight, ”said the chef. On Sunday, a boy in an SUV was shot and grazed on the northwest side of town on 26th and Harding streets. It happened at 5 p.m. and another man was shot dead. Police also do not believe it was the intended target. (Old story link)
On July 31, five people were shot dead outside a funeral home, including a 4-year-old and a 16-year-old. It happened during the day on West 30th Street.
Police said far too many children are injured in city shootings and the community needs to take care of our children.
The IMPD said no officer unloaded their weapons during Wednesday night’s shooting.
Police continued their investigation Thursday morning. No motive has been determined.

My thoughts are with the officer and his family, as well as all of the brave IMPD officers who regularly put themselves in danger to keep our community safe. We must do all we can to stop the scourge of gun violence, deploying resources and uniting our neighbors to end this vicious cycle. “
