Police officer killed in North Carolina during a roadside check; suspect also dead

A policeman shot dead Saturday night at a roadside check in Mooresville, northwest of the country, died, according to sources.

The K9 officer, Jordan Harris Sheldon, 32, a veteran of the Mooresville force for six years, was killed shortly after 10 pm, not far from Highway 150, reported Charlotte WSOC Television.

Sheldon was rushed to the scene for medical treatment, but did not survive, according to the report.

An unidentified suspect prosecuted by the police for the shooting was in a nearby apartment, but was shot and killed while the police were closed, according to the report.

The Mooresville Police Department announced the tragic news of Sheldon's death in a Facebook post, with pictures of the officer killed.

The police, arriving at the scene after the shooting, had spotted what was believed to be the suspect's vehicle and then began to pursue it, WSOC reported.

Mooresville is a city of about 36,500 inhabitants, located about 29 km north of Charlotte.
