Police search for suspect after man shot in the leg at Galleria shopping center, officials say

HOUSTON – Authorities are looking for a suspect after a man was shot in the leg on Friday at the Galleria Mall, Houston police said.

Officials said police responded to a disturbance at the mall at around 7:50 p.m. Police said a man shot another person inside the mall near the food court, then had fled into the parking lot. When an officer working at the mall was not on duty, he approached the suspect, they exchanged shots, according to HPD.

Police said it was not clear whether the suspect was shot, but was still at large. Officials also said the shooting appeared to be an isolated event.

Police said the man who was shot was taken to hospital in an unknown condition, police said. It is not known whether the victim knew the suspect who shot him or what led to the shooting.

Authorities also said it was not clear whether the victim was in possession of a weapon.

The officer was not injured, police said.

Houston Police said the area has been locked down to search for the suspect. But, the police believe he may have left the area.

Many employees and buyers said they were locked inside the mall and parking lot.

Mina Ward ate in the food court with her sister. His sister heard the shots.

“I looked to my right and saw a swarm of people running for the exit. I was in GO-MODE from there. I just got up and ran with them. All you hear is “there’s a shootout, there’s a shootout,” Ward said.

Houston Police said they plan to review surveillance footage from the shooting.
