Portland police shot dead a man in the stairwell at the Lovejoy Building parking lot, which houses the Safeway store in the Pearl district of Portland.
Buyers and others inside said they heard a disturbance and then saw a bleeding woman outside the building.
Police confirmed their arrival after the announcement that a man was armed with a knife and was threatening to possess a bomb. They found a man and a woman in the stairwell and the woman looked hurt.
The police office stated that they were using both a non-lethal force and a deadly force. The suspect died before the arrival of medical help. The injured woman was taken to the hospital. Officials determined that there was no explosive on the premises. No identity has yet been published.
