The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a fatal police shooting near Braham, Minnesota on Sunday after police said a stolen vehicle call from Blaine led to a lawsuit.

According to the Blaine Police Department, one person was shot and killed by police and another was arrested after the chase. Police said the suspects fired, hitting a K9 from the Anoka Police Department. Another police officer was hospitalized with injuries sustained during an initial incident with the suspects in Blaine.

Police said the shooting and chase was the end result of a call to a department store in Blaine on Sunday afternoon for a stolen vehicle call. There, the suspects fled from officers and hijacked another nearby vehicle, police said.

“The officers on their arrival located the suspects in a stolen vehicle and the suspects fled the officers there,” said Chief Brian Podany.

Steve Lund says he was dropping his wife off at Kohl’s when he saw Blaine’s cops pull over to a car parked right outside the store.

“They were able to take off and they were chasing them down the aisles of the parking lot because, I guess, it looked pretty quick but they were chasing them through the parking lot and they were able to escape,” Lund recalls.

The suspects were able to go to another parking lot. “The suspects then hijacked a nearby vehicle using a firearm,” Chief Podany added. “Our officers then located this vehicle and the suspects fled as we tried to stop them.”

In the newly stolen vehicle, police said the suspects took off heading north on Route 65.

“After the vehicle broke down, two adult men fled the vehicle and shots were fired,” Chief Podany said. “An Anoka dog was shot at this point and one of the suspects was shot here at the scene and pronounced dead at the scene.”

Anoka police confirmed that their K9 Bravo was shot down during the incident. After undergoing surgery. we are told he is in stable condition. The other person in the vehicle was taken into custody and police said she was not injured.
