Police say woman died after high-speed van crashed into monument in downtown Buffalo

The unidentified driver was in critical condition after the crash, which happened before 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The passenger, whose name was also not released, was declared dead at the scene.

Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo told reporters the vehicle reached “extreme speed” before crashing into the marble obelisk outside Buffalo City Hall.

The Buffalo News reported that the Toyota Sienna crashed through two marble poles surrounding the site, then struck the 96-foot-tall (29-meter-high) monument in honor of President William McKinley, who was assassinated during a 1901 visit to the town of western New Brunswick. York.
