Police say woman died after high-speed van crashed into monument in downtown Buffalo
BUFFALO, NY – A woman was killed in a Thanksgiving accident on Thanksgiving Day after a high-speed van entered the McKinley Monument in downtown Buffalo, police said.
The unidentified driver was in critical condition after the crash, which happened before 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The passenger, whose name was also not released, was declared dead at the scene.
Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo told reporters the vehicle reached “extreme speed” before crashing into the marble obelisk outside Buffalo City Hall.
“It’s a first to see a vehicle that has gone this far and taken off,” said Rinaldo. Police have opened a criminal investigation “to determine exactly what happened,” he said.
