Rumors of an Apple iPhone 12 battery accessory are starting to gain traction. Apple has offered a Smart Battery Case for several previous iPhones, but this year Apple could tap into the MagSafe system to provide a unique experience for iPhone 12 users… what do you want to see from Apple?
The rumor
Bloomberg reported earlier today that Apple is developing a new magnetic battery accessory for the iPhone 12. The report explains that Apple has been developing this new accessory “for at least a year”, and its launch is “expected in the months to come. following the release of the iPhone 12 range. “
The report explains:
The battery attaches to the back of an iPhone 12 using the MagSafe system, which all new phones use to charge and pair with other accessories such as cases and wallets. Some prototypes of the battery have a white rubber exterior, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the product is not yet public. The new accessory would be different from Apple battery add-ons for previous iPhones in that it only provides extra battery life and does not serve as a full protective case.
In terms of magnetic force, the report states that the MagSafe battery was “found to be strong enough for the charging unit to stay in place.”
That being said, Bloomberg cautions that development of the MagSafe battery has been slowed down by software quirks. Specifically, a bug causes iOS to incorrectly indicate that the pack is overheating.
History lesson
As Bloomberg Note, this new MagSafe battery pack would be a departure from Apple’s previous Smart Battery Case design. It wouldn’t offer any protection for the iPhone, for example, although it could be used with a separate MagSafe case.

The iPhone 12 launched later than the iPhones, with Apple spreading the release in October and November. This could mean that the iPhone 12 MagSafe’s battery will launch later than previous versions, or that Apple will abandon the project entirely due to the aforementioned development hurdles.
