Third Base Nationals Anthony Rendon has been one of the most valuable players of the majors since his first full season in 2014, having recorded the eighth best goal in the league (26.4). The 28-year-old is now enjoying another magnificent campaign, which may well end with better offensive statistics in his career, since he reduced the score by 331 / .416 / .669 (181 wRC +) with eight circuits in 137 appearances to the plate. At 19-27, the Nationals have not been able to capitalize on Rendon's excellence this season – they have not even won playoffs in his career – and maybe the time has come for the club to enjoy his presence.
Rendon is one of the best free agents looming in the game, a player likely to collide with a nine-digit payday over the next few months, and he is far from certain to stay in Washington. Rendon has expressed interest in continuing with the Nationals, who have made an effort to extend it, but the team has not yet managed to close the gap with Boras Corporation's customer. Rizzo will have to determine whether the compensation plan for Rendon's departure will be worth more than the Nats would have acquired for him in an exchange.
