Popeyes (QSR) is adding chicken nuggets to its menu, using the same recipe as the highly coveted Chicken Sandwich which has been a smash hit for the restaurant chain.

The addition of the White Meat Chicken Nuggets, with options ranging from 4 to 36 pieces, is expected to hit menus starting July 27 in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The fast food giant is hoping this launch will match the front desk that hosted its fried chicken sandwich in August 2019.

This menu item started the now famous chicken sandwich war industry-wide, with McDonald’s (MCD), Wendy’s (WEN), Shake Shack (SHAK) and KFC (YUM) and others all joining the battle. Wendy’s and McDonald’s have also launched their own spicy version of the menu item.

“We believe we have started over with chicken nuggets,” the company boasted in a statement. “We’ve invested time to perfect a product that harnesses our classic techniques and Louisiana flavors that will change the way people think and experience Chicken Nuggets,” Popeye’s added.

The chicken is marinated for at least 12 hours, breaded by hand and with bread, then slowly cooked “to perfection” with a special frying process, Popeye added.

Morningstar Equity analyst Sean Dunlop said customers returned to “familiar favorites” during the pandemic, leaning on comfort foods like fried chicken sandwiches, steaks and pizza.

As a result, “the largest trust companies with robust digital capabilities” were given a boost as consumers sought affordable, value-driven options, Dunlop told Yahoo Finance in an email. However, chicken nuggets in particular are popular for several reasons.
