Here’s some strange news: two Team Fortress 2 the mods were suddenly and mysteriously removed from the internet and can no longer be downloaded. According to the developers, this is due to “arrangements with Valve”, but neither team has explained What that means. According to the developers of both mods, there is nothing to worry about.

Team Fortress 2 is a competitive online class-based first person shooter developed and published by Valve and first released in 2007. Since then it has continued to see long term and sporadic support from Valve. He also has hats. You’ve probably heard of hats. It also has a fairly large community of die-hard gamers and modders who still play the game regularly. Two popular mods among the community are Open fortress and TF2 Classic. But, at least for now, these mods are no longer available for download and installation.

On September 10, at exactly the same time, the Twitter accounts for Open fortress and TF2 Classic posted strangely similar messages. Both mod teams have announced that they are temporarily disabling all official downloads for their TF2 mods. And both explained that this was due to an “arrangement with Valve” but gave no further details and promised fans to “stay tuned” for more information.

Two days later, both mods still can’t be downloaded from either project’s official website.

This being the internet, some gamers panicked and feared Valve had stepped in and used legal means to shut down the mods.

Kotaku contacted Valve regarding the removed mods.

But, as mentioned in the tweets, this disabling downloads is only temporary. It is therefore unlikely that Valve issued a DMCA Claim on either mod or threatened either team to cease and desist, as these are more permanent ways to remove content. And while it is true that some companies—Take two and Nintendo, for example, quickly attack developers in the community to create mods or fan games, Valve has never been like that. Hell they left fan games based on Half-life become full retail products which are now sold on Steam.

And both mods are still alive, with people currently playing them. You just can’t download either mod right now.

The popular theory is that the two mods could be moved officially to Steam or merged into vanilla. TF2 in a certain way. This would explain the calm and relaxed reaction of the developers on Discord., where they assured people that there was no reason to worry or panic. While they also don’t have any additional details to share, they haven’t given a date for when downloads would be available again.

Open fortress is a mod which is a free and open-source TF2 project that aims to introduce new game modes, characters, stories and more in the know “TF2 Universe.” TF2 Classic is a mod that tries to recreate the early years of the online shooter for players who miss the old days that are simpler and less wild.
