Porsche 992 GT3 breaks cover with wing that does business

The 992 GT3 is almost here. In anticipation, Porsche has released a handful of images of a pre-production version of the upcoming 911 on the track, well, would you like to take a look at that rear spoiler?

It’s not the first time we’ve seen the new GT3’s most important aerodynamic feature, but it’s our clearest take to date on the final, undisclosed design. ‘Hanging’ fenders like this are still not so common on road cars, but their clunky shape serves a purpose. Because the pylons support the wing from above, the air passing under the wing is not disturbed as much as it would normally be. This translates into less drag than the conventional approach and more efficient overall downforce production.

The 992 GT3’s other visual distinctions can be seen primarily at the front, where you’ll find a new bumper design with a large central air intake flanked by slats on either side that channel air behind the wheels. There are also those deep vents near the tip of the hood – certainly harder to miss than the thin vents from previous GT3s.

The result would be a 50% increase in downforce compared to the outgoing 991 GT3, according to Andreas Preuninger, director of GT vehicles at Porsche, who relayed the gains to Edmunds.

While not much has been done on the power front, Preuninger said it’s hard enough to keep the 992 GT3 naturally aspirated – another big update was reserved for the front suspension, which ditch the MacPherson struts for the double wishbones derived from the 911 RSR. This is the first time such a setup has been fitted to a road 911, and it should keep the tires even more stuck in the corners.

It won’t be long before the new GT3 tilts in a true production-ready finish, but this preview offers little to complain about, stylistically. And, being a 911 GT3, it’ll likely be a dream to drive as well. Not anticipating any surprises there.
