The mayor of a Florida town opened fire on a SWAT team that broke into his home on the water's edge and arrested him, officials said.
Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad fired twice at police officers while he was arrested Thursday accused of practicing medicine without a license.
MPs announced their presence at his home on the Gulf Coast at around 4:40 am while they were trying to execute a search warrant.
Shots were fired when the officers entered, but they withdrew and did not fired the shots, officials said. No MPs were injured in the shooting.
"He is lucky not to be dead," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference.
The 68-year-old mayor went to the authorities and was taken to Pasco County Jail.
The authorities said they had received reports that Massad – whose medical license had been revoked in 1992 – was still treating patients at his home.
Massad faces charges of attempted murder and unlicensed practice.
