“They will act as a high-profile presence in the community, aimed at deterring those who are considering committing crimes,” the Portland Police Department said in a press release.

The community safety team will respond to shootings in the city center and take witness statements and evidence, police said. The FBI will provide investigative support and look for possible links to federal crimes.

An FBI-led task force was established in April to work with Portland officials and other local law enforcement agencies to address gun violence.

This weekend, the authorities will withdraw agents from the northern and eastern constituencies early in the morning to reinforce the workforce in the central constituency.

“Last week’s tragic shooting resonated throughout the community,” said Chief Chuck Lovell. “We are seeing almost nighttime gun violence, but as things open up we want people to feel safe, as they come downtown and congregate in the entertainment district.
