Portland Police on Monday urged a crowd of about 200 people who marched on a Portland Police Association (PPA) building to step away and stop attempts to damage the property.
Authorities have determined that people near the PPA building on the city’s North Lombard Street – which has been the target of vandalism and arson on numerous occasions – “may attempt to force entry into the building.”
“Failure to comply with this order may expose you to the use of crowd control officers, including, but not limited to tear gas and / or shock weapons,” police said.

The organized protest left a local park around 10 p.m. before a crowd of 100 marched on the building declaring the need for justice. Video taken of the march saw many people chanting that if they didn’t get justice they would “burn!” a Portland KOIN reporter tweeted.
When the group arrived at the building, it had grown to around 200 people. Protest cars blocked traffic on Lombard Street as music and speeches echoed over a loudspeaker on the 82nd night of unrest in the city. Others have started spray painting the plywood surrounding the PPA building.
A few people stood out from the crowd and smashed a small window near the back of the building, and at least one person attempted to get inside, according to the station.
Video taken of the building on the city’s North Lombard Street appeared to show that a window had been damaged, KOIN reported. Police are said to issue a warning over a loudspeaker to protesters. Just before 11 p.m., protesters were ordered to come out so that officers could check the damage.

After issuing the warning, about two dozen officers arrived and formed a line near the side entrance to the building. When officers later withdrew, someone in the crowd threw a bottle at police, who responded by releasing smoke and shooting pepperballs, according to The Oregonian.
Letha Winston, the mother of a 27-year-old man who was killed by police after shooting and injuring two others in 2018, has suggested that standing was not enough to create change. She urged protesters to march through residential areas of the city instead of gathering in front of the PPA building, the newspaper reported.

“Sitting doesn’t get justice,” she said.
Police at times reacted forcefully during nearly three months of protests, which now have the absence of federal agents. Authorities have often declared gatherings illegal in response to protesters throwing objects or pointing lasers at police officers.

Late Sunday, violence erupted in Portland, a few blocks from the Federal Courthouse after the driver of a van crashed, was allegedly removed from the vehicle and then brutally beaten by a crowd after a confrontation with protesters .
