Portland, Oregon city council plans to vote Wednesday on a proposal to ban doing business with the state of Texas following controversial new abortion restrictions passed in Lone Star state.
In a statement last week, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said city council would vote on a ban on trade in goods and services with Texas and business travel by state employees, citing the new law that bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected and allows individuals to sue anyone they believe has helped a woman violate boundaries.
“This law does not demonstrate concern for the health, safety and well-being of those who could become pregnant. This law does not recognize or respect the human rights of those who could become pregnant, ”Wheeler said in the statement. “This law rewards individuals who exercise surveillance and control over the bodies of others. It violates the separation of Church and State. And, it will force people to carry pregnancies against their will. “
“Portland City Council supports people who may one day face difficult decisions about pregnancy, and we respect their right to make the best decision for themselves,” he said.
The city’s move to the northwest comes as Texas faced considerable backlash over the new law, which went into effect on Wednesday.
The legislation, signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (right), effectively banned almost all abortions around six weeks after a woman’s pregnancy begins, when a heartbeat can usually be detected.
Later in the week, the Supreme Court refused to block the law with a 5-4 vote.
