Federico Chiesa speaks: “Our approach was bad and the game became even more difficult for us after this first goal,” he told a Uefa journalist. “When you are not totally focused and you are not giving your best, [teams can] punish you at this level. “

At the final whistle: Several Juventus players surrounded match referee Carlos del Carro, asking in the strongest terms why he had not awarded them a penalty for Sanusi’s challenge against Ronaldo late in the game. My reading, for what it’s worth is that Ronaldo was attempting a Cruyff turn in the penalty area, lost his balance and Sanusi just passed him as he fell. Ergo, no penalty. However, I wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if it had been given and I’m surprised Senor Del Carro didn’t at least take a look at his Field Monitor.

Some post-match thoughts: Porto will be delighted with their very first victory against Juventus … of course. However, their enjoyment of the occasion will be tempered by knowing that they could and should have won a lot more. The Italian champions reeked of Estadio do Dragao tonight and were a pale imitation of themselves. They will be greatly relieved to have escaped with just a 2-1 loss and the away goal that came with it following such a dismal performance.

Full time: Porto 2-1 Juventus
Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeep! It was all over in Porto, where the home side won by a strange goal of three.
21:55
90 + 3 min: A late assault from Juventus. Cristiano Ronaldo appeals for a penalty after falling into a heap under a push from Zaido Sanusi as he tried to control a long ball above De Ligt. There’s no doubt he had a flare, but he was already going to the ground when it happened.
21:52
90 + 2 min: Alex Sandro takes one for the team, fouling Mehdi Taremi as the striker rushed through Juve’s penalty area. This is only a reservation as Matthijs De Ligt was nearby. On a free kick, Szczesny drops the ball but gets away.
21:50
90 + 1 min: Porto called in two more submarines in an attempt to cut down on time, their trainer’s son Francisco among them.
21:49
89 min: There isn’t a bad win against Juventus, but if it stays that way, Porto will be disappointed to have conceded an away goal. The Italians were so unspeakably bad for most of tonight’s game, they couldn’t complain if they left the Estadio do Dragao on the wrong side of a hiding place. As it stands, they will see this as a tremendous result. Pirlo’s substitutions saved the bacon on his side.
21:46
87 min: Porto move closer as Mateus Uribe sends the ball over to a Juve defender on Taremi’s chest. Before he was able to pull the trigger four or five yards, the ball came out for a corner by De Ligt. Nothing comes from the decor.
Update
21:44
85 min: Ronaldo crosses from the left to the far post, then gestures angrily upon finding that there is no one there to try to bring the ball home.
21:42
GOAL! Porto 2-1 Juventus (Church 82)
Juventus withdraw one. Adrien Rabiot runs behind the Porto defense and brings the ball back into his penalty area. Federico Chiesa first meets him around 14 yards from goal, stabbing the ball into the ground and flying off to the party as he bounces off and passes Marchesin.
Update
21:40
81 min: From a Porto corner, Marco Grujic heads for Oliveira’s delivery to the far post but directs his effort widely. It was good luck!
21:39
79 min: Spotting Marchesin four or five meters from his line, Morata hits the ball as high as possible towards the goal. It’s a daring effort and the ball lands on the roof of the net, but the goalkeeper had it covered.
21:37
77 min: Alvaro Morata is played behind the Porto defense and brings a smart save from Marchesin. He was offside.
Update
21:34
75 min: Alvaro Morata is calling for a sanction after being dispossessed by Chancel Mbemba, who was clumsy but did not break any law. The Spaniard has to settle for a corner instead.
21:32
73 min: Bentancur slips in to deny Uribe the chance to send a cross against Juve’s penalty. From the corner that follows, Sergio Oliveira’s corner is cleared at the near post.
9:30 p.m.
71 min: Good job from Ronaldo, who gallops down the left flank before piercing a low cross towards Chiesa. His shot is saved by Agustin Marchesin, but the flag goes up. Alvaro Morata was offside as he went into hiding in hopes of pouncing on the football-shaped and waist-sized crumbs that fell from Marchesin’s table.
Update
21:28
68 min: Enterprising tricks from Jesus Corona, who stands with his back to Juve’s goal from around 20 yards, throws the ball into the air to set up his own acrobatic kick. His effort is reversed by Szczesny but would not have counted if he had entered. The referee had spotted one offense or another.
21:26
67 min: Porto replacement: Moussa Marega, who scored Porto’s second goal after 20 seconds of the second half, starts. He is replaced by Marco Grujic, the Serbian midfielder on loan from Liverpool to Porto.
21:25
66 min: Rodrigo Bentancur tries his luck with a long shot. He hardly used any backlifts but spanked the ball with venom. Above the bar, but not by much.
21:23
65 min: Morata recovers the ball and advances, only to fall victim to a foul by Mateus Uribe.
21:22
64 min: Juventus replacement: Alvaro Morata replaces Tyler McKinnie.
21:22
62 min: Matthijs De Ligt is penalized in retrospect for a foul he committed at the start of my entry at 59 minutes. The referee had played the advantage at the time.
21:16
57 min: Kulusevski is now penalized for having controlled the ball with his hand and Porto take advantage of the interruption of play to make a substitution. Luis Diaz replaces Otavio.
21:15
56 min: Dejan Kulusevski has a half chance cut off by Merih Demiral and that’s about all Juventus have had luck so far in this half.
Update
21:12
52 min: Sergio Oliveira appears in the penalty area at the other end of the pitch, bringing a smart one-handed save from Wojciech Szczesny, who looked slightly tangled and had to shift his weight from one foot to the other to reach the ball. Maybe the shot took a deflection – Juventus are getting run over here.
21:10
50 min: Juventus win a corner and the ball is thrown to the nearest post by Sandro. Sergio Oliveira light pirate.
21:08
48 min: Porto galloped across the pitch from the kick-off and the ball was brought back to Marega in the penalty area from the touchline. His first contact was sublime and pulled him away from Federico Chiesa before throwing a rather tame shot into the corner in front of Szczesny, who was beaten at his near post.
Update
21:05
GOAL! Porto 2-0 Juventus (Marega 46)
The bells of hell! It’s ridiculous – another great start for Porto, as Moussa Marega places the ball in the corner after 20 seconds of the second half.
Update
21:04
Second half: Porto 1-0 Juventus
46 min: Play redsumes with no staff changes on either side. I’m surprised Alvaro Morata was not sent to bat by Pirlo, as Dejan Kusulevski barely got a kick.
20:49
Half-time: FC Porto 1-0 Juventus
Peep! It’s your fate for the first half, which got off to the worst possible start for Juventus when Mehdi Taremi jumped on a Rodrigo Bentancur mistake to score an opportunistic goal. Juve have been surprisingly slow and look really at their wit’s end already. I suspect we’ll see a change or two from Andrea Pirlo before too long. It was so comfortable for Porto, whose defense seemed remarkably secure.
20:46
45 + 1 min: Ronaldo tries to run into Porto’s penalty area from the left, but he is encumbered with the ball.
20:45
45 min: Ronaldo wins his team a corner after such an excursion. Bentancur’s delivery is going well, despite Ronaldo’s best efforts to reach the ball.
20:44
44 min: We’re almost at the break and Cristiano Ronaldo only had one touch in Porto’s penalty area. He also becomes frustrated, diving deeper and deeper in an attempt to spend more time on the ball.
20:43
41 min: Another free kick, from the same area. The ball is sent again to the far post and breaks on Adrien Rabiot, whose kick is stopped by Marchesin, who clearly beats him. It was a spectacular effort but lacked real venom. It was also Juve’s first shot on target.
20:40
40 min: Juve free kick, wide on the right after a foul by Sergio Oliveira on Matthijs De Ligt. Bentancur finally gets a right and chooses Cristiano Ronaldo at the far post. His lowered header doesn’t bother Marchesin.
