The Cabinet of Ministers on Thursday approved a Legislative Decree requiring the registration and conclusion of compulsory liability insurance for remote-controlled civil aircraft systems called drones.

Underwriting of third-party liability insurance is therefore mandatory for drone operators weighing more than 900 grams to cover damage to third parties. It is also mandatory to record the operator identification data and drones weighing more than 250 grams. There will be fines for those who do not comply.

These are the new rules after some drones, especially in areas near airports. It is the National Authority of Civil Aviation (ANAC) which regulates drones.

"The diploma, which supplements the ANAC Regulation 1093/2016, published on December 14, 2016, establishes the obligation to register and take out liability insurance, strengthening control over the use of these equipments and the safety of the people, "reads the communiqué of the Council of Ministers.

The information on the registration of these aircraft will consist of a database managed by the 39, ANAC, "to enable effective control and supervision of this authority over the operators of such aircraft."

"Legislation now approved also establishes the sanctions regime to be applied in case of non-compliance with established rules , which is the responsibility of the ANAC, responsible for ensuring the safety of activities related to the civilian use of these aircraft, "the statement said.
