The Volkswagen revealed more of the T-Cross this week in Germany, where the new compact SUV was designed and is almost ready to enter commercial production. In a statement, the manufacturer only reports that "the overall presentation will be in the second half." Before the end of this year, T-Cross arrives at the assembly line of São José dos Pinhais (PR), a factory that receives R $ 2 billion in investment to produce the car on the MQB-A platform ( read here ). The national launch is scheduled for January 2019, but VW has now anticipated some of the specifications of the Brazilian model, which has differences from the German, including in the dimensions.
According to the first information disclosed, in the Brazilian market, the T-Cross will be offered only with a six-speed automatic transmission and two TSI turbocharged and direct injection petrol / ethanol engines, 1.0 three-cylinder 128 horsepower and 1.4 four-cylinder 150 hp – both are manufactured by VW in São Carlos (SP) and already equip a good number of cars of the brand in Brazil, such as Polo, Virtus and Golf. A version with manual gearbox and 1.6 MSI engine, aspirated, will be produced for export to South American countries.
According to Volkswagen, the Brazilian T-Cross takes the generous 2.5-inch wheelbase of the Virtus sedan (mounted on the same platform), 8.6 centimeters more than the European model, which repeats the hatch Polo not to compete with the T-Roc, derived from the Golf. Thus, the T-Cross guarantees the largest inter-axle segment of compact SUVs in Brazil. With this, it offers cabin comfort to compensate for the shorter length (4.19 m) and height (1.57 m) compared to major competitors such as Honda HR-V, Hyundai Crete, Nissan Kicks and Ford EcoSport, all slightly longer and taller.
The largest inter-axle configuration and shorter length harms the T-Cross's trunk space, which was 390 liters, compared to the 356-gallon Ford EcoSport, the smallest of the category but less than 400 liters of HR-V and Kicks.
Like its "brothers" platforms MQB-A, Polo and Virtus, the T-Cross has the same electro-electronic architecture. It will also include optional LED headlamps, a 100% digital and configurable dashboard, a multimedia system with an eight-inch touch screen, as well as engine start and keyless door unlocking.
It also has similar configurations of active and passive safety, with the use of high strength steel in the construction of the body and equipment like six airbags, electronic stability and control Traction, Park Assist in parallel and transverse waves, fatigue detector.
T-Cross will finally bring Volkswagen into the most dynamic segment of the Brazilian market, that of compact SUVs. The model is part of the offensive of 20 launches in Brazil until 2020, including five SUV, which began last April with the imported Tiguan Allspace. Also in the national manufacturing plans something of the mini-SUV type and the compact-compact Tarek, to be produced in Argentina. The United States should come the big Atlas SUV.
