Facebook: Closed groups no longer list members publicly

[ad_1]

After being criticized for "exposing" a group of women at risk for breast cancer, Facebook decided to change its privacy policies into closed groups within the social network. Until then, it was not possible to view closed group discussions and postings without being a participant, but the list of members was still public.

Facebook already had another option called "Secret Group", which prevented non-participating users from seeing the list of members of this group, but this setting also prevented this type of group from being found on the engines such as Google

The fact that the list of members was publicly exposed participants, clearly indicating that they had or could have breast cancer

And that was precisely the dead end at which the group called "BRCA Sisterhood" was facing. The group served as a support and discussion group on the BRCA gene, which, when present in the genetic code of women, greatly increases the risk of breast cancer. They could not use a secret group, since the goal was precisely to be accessible to women suffering from the same illness. But the fact that the list of members was public exposed the participants, clearly indicating that they had or could have breast cancer.

The BRCA Sisterhood was only aware of the problem when one of the participants discovered a Chrome extension that was able to extract the entire list of participants with some basic personal data in a table with a few clicks.

Failed or function?

By the time the controversy about it began, Facebook did not admit that it was a privacy issue, but rather a feature of closed groups. And, in fact, they have always been. It turned out that something like this had not happened yet that became quite controversial as the social network realized that it was necessary to make changes.

In an official comment sent to The Verge Facebook has confirmed that it's changing in closed groups, but the company has not made this new feature public, even though it has had some opportunities to announce it, as well as other changes that the company has made public since June.

In any case, it is safe to say
