The late diagnosis of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus is one of the main problems of the fight against the disease in Portugal, concludes a study of the National Institute of Health, Dr. Ricardo Jorge, and the Directorate General of Health.
According to the report on HIV and AIDS, more than half of the 1,068 infections registered in 2017 were diagnosed too late and in people aged 50 and over, late diagnosis occurred in more than two third of cases.
Figures that put Portugal in the lineup of Europe in terms of diagnosis, but all is not bad news. The number of new infections continues to decline and has declined by about 40% over the last decade, with injecting drug use, which was once a major concern, reaching a record 1.8%.
