O INOV C 2020 is a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), whose main objective is to mobilize ideas for the spirit of enterprise and innovation in the Central region.

The INOV C 2020 ignition bags were awarded this year to 15 "commercially applicable scientific research projects".

The research project of the The University of Coimbra is betting on the therapeutic potential of bilberry leaf, a wasted agricultural byproduct, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

"With a view to creating nutraceutical products with neuroprotective and neuro-regenerative properties for therapeutic use in multiple sclerosis and neurological and psychiatric disorders, the research team is developing a new technology to obtain Phenolic compounds to act in the central nervous system, which are present in the leaves with high content of blueberry leaves, "says the team of researchers.

With experience in the fields of pharmacology, neurology and phytochemistry, the project has a multidisciplinary research team of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, in collaboration with the School of Biotechnology of the Catholic University of Porto, and the sponsorship of the Agricultural and Agricultural Cooperative Mangualde CRL (COAPE).

The consortium INOV C 2020 is led by the University of Coimbra and includes "ten nuclear partners": the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, the Pedro Nunes Institute, ITeCons, SerQ, ABAP, Obitec and TagusValley.

The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for an implementation period from 18 April 2017 to 17 April 2019. The partners will make a total investment of EUR 1 627 614, of which EUR 1 383. .472 euros financed by the ERDF.
